about

Abaporu, in the Tupi-Guarani language of natives from Brazil, means "man who eats people". A reference to the Brazilian Anthropophagic Movement that retakes characteristics of the beginnings of the Brazilian cultural formation: the combination of the primitive cultures (indigenous and African) and of the Latin culture, formed by the European colonization. One of the topics of the movement was the insinuation of the use of a non-catechized literary language. In his manifesto Oswald de Andrade states that only anthropophagy unites us, proposing to "swallow" the European cultural legacy and "digest it" in the form of a typically Brazilian art. To this day in Brazil indigenous communities are massacred by landowners, and politicians oppose demarcation of their lands. This is not a war cry, it is a cry of peace.
